Volunteering and Employment History

Our sophomore winter work internships are spent as engine cadets on a ship, so I worked with the Military Sealift Command on the U.S.N.S Apalachicola. It was something I was very nervous about for the year or so leading up to it, and I came out of it a worker that they would easily hire again. Although we had set working hours, I always put extra time in outside of the typical working hours along with weekends. I learned a substantial amount from this experience, both on the side of running a ship and the various systems that weave together.

As part of my freshman winter work internship, I went to Washington state and worked in the small coastal town of Westport to build large composite yachts. I spent the first month in the large part lamination department, infusing the entire pilot house for one of the next yachts to be delivered. My second month was split into the electrical department, where I stripped all of the lights on the yacht, and electrical sub-assembly, which was mainly electronics and various other jobs that were currently on back-log for the yacht they were trying to deliver.

Technocopia is a non-profit makerspace in Worcester where I volunteer as an intern. I give tours, manage the front desk, and help out in the digital fabrication workshop shown which includes CAD, laser cutters, and 3D printers. I am qualified to operate the laser cutter, vinyl cutter, sewing machines and 3D printers. In one picture I am helping produce Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during the COVID-19 pandemic, where Technocopia produced 9,000 face shields.

I’ve been volunteering at the Community Harvest barn ever since finding out about it at one of my field trips in elementary school. They have donated over a million pounds of fresh produce over 5 years to the local community for hunger relief, including Grafton and Worcester Food banks. I know that no matter what labor I do there, it has a tremendous impact on those in need of it, I particularly enjoy the early morning time slots before my day gets properly started.
The farm inspired me to plant my own small garden at home, which has become a place to practice environmentally friendly gardening and weed management, as well as scorn birds from trying to eat all the berries.

A teaching assistant at Kumon where I help with all the questions the students have in class, grade homework and support those who need some extra assistance. The kids are definitely the best part, it's thrilling to see the growth in their confidence, and the satisfaction of helping them through a difficult concept.
